Defensive Monitoring—the next evolution of saving lives and avoiding costs.
Prefense™ goes far beyond the traditional spot-check monitoring strategy. As such, it has created its own category—defensive monitoring—that has three critical attributes:
Technology-enabled – Prefense leverages Nihon Kohden America’s advanced technology capabilities, integrating with NTX and the premise of the 5 Million Lives Campaign to form a proven solution that prevents adverse patient events.
Improves quality – Quality is vastly improved when Prefense is deployed. As opposed to traditional spot-check monitoring, Prefense allows medical personnel to track trends in vital statistics with a simplified, easy-to-use low-acuity detection system. The ability to track trends gives hospital staff advance warning that is unobtainable using the traditional vital signs implementation with other monitoring methods. A smoothing algorithm incorporated into Prefense has been proven to reduce false alarms by greater than 80% – allowing nurses to spend more time on patient care without having to respond to an inordinate amount of false alarms.
Cost-effective – In the past, monitoring patients’ vital signs continuously has been too expensive to implement in all areas of the hospital. The cost-effectiveness of Prefense allows monitoring to be performed anywhere in the hospital—including those areas where no monitoring currently takes place even though the risk of adverse patient events is high.
